Artist Statement 

A curator imagines and builds a show around a theme. Since 2009 our yearly Ubuntu Arts projects at Wheelock College/Boston University have been built around two foundational themes: The concept of Ubuntu (I am because you are) and the centering of youth voice. These two images represent those themes. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who passed away last year, visited us in 2008 and shared with us the understanding of Ubuntu as a worldview from his culture. Over the subsequent years hundreds of young people have shared their voices and passions to create collaborative artwork in the spirit of Ubuntu.
